What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a type of hands-on healthcare that recognises the link between the structures of the human body and the way it functions.

  • Using the skilled evaluation of your case history (the story of your problem) and a range of hands-on examination techniques, osteopaths can diagnose dysfunctions present in your body. The effective diagnosis then directs the osteopath along a patient-specific treatment process, with a skilled osteopath guiding you in managing your own health.

Osteopaths use techniques such as stretching and soft tissue work for the treatment of tissues like muscles, combined with manipulation of specific joints or mobilisation of organs. The treatment techniques can be direct like manipulations (patients can typically detect the use of the technique) or indirect techniques such as ligament balancing at the problem area (patients may be less aware of the subtle techniques).  The technique may also be directed at parts of the body away from the problem area, which may need a bit of explanation from your osteopath.

Why choose an osteopath?

Osteopaths undertake an extensive university programme in area such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques.

  • Osteopaths work with other healthcare professionals including general practitioners, specialists, and imaging providers to ensure the best care for their patients.

Registered osteopaths are able to make referrals for X-rays and ultrasounds. Appointments with an osteopath don’t require any referral, which means you can book an appointment directly.

Adam at OsteoFix is a Registered Osteopath and is an ACC accredited provider, which allows him to lodge ACC claims and have the appointments partially subsidised by ACC. Osteopathic treatments are also covered by some private health insurances.

How is Osteofix different?

If you want to do something (hike uphill / sit comfortably) but feel limited by your body in some way (knee is stiff / sitting hurts my back) then that’s where I can help! The OsteoFix combination of osteopath and exercise scientist means a more complete form of healthcare.

Osteopathy provides the means to effectively diagnose and treat imbalances and relieve pain. Exercise prescriptions or general movement tasks are fundamental in the recovery from pain and dysfunction, and essential in conditioning a person to perform in exercise and daily life.

  • Adam is a Structural, Visceral, & Paediatric Osteopath with the Exercise Scientist Influencing the Process. Structural Osteopathy (bones, muscles, connective tissues, nerves, & fluid movement), Visceral Osteopathy (organs & their functions), Paediatric Osteopathy (specialised osteopathy for infants, young children & adolescents), and Self-care Prescription (things you can do to help yourself).

I take a patient-centred approach to care, which means I listen carefully to a patient’s story and ask questions to learn more about the problem. I also like to answer any questions you may have and provide information to support your health decisions.

Our communications guide the examination process, and treatment is then specifically targeted at the presenting problem to reduce pain and enhance a person’s function.

Patients will typically get actions of self-care to engage with such as ‘reduce the time spent slouching on the couch’ or ‘place this ball under the sore part of your calf for a minute’.

My overall aim is to get you healthy and independent as soon as possible.

  • As an osteopath I feel like a detective for the body and by association everything else that makes up the person who arrives at my clinic. Sometimes fixing a problem is clinical with common timelines and a protocol based approach, for example a recent injury such as a muscle strain can be quickly identified as the problem and we know it typically recovers in a matter of weeks. On other occasions the problem needs a broader approach, for example a person who cycles to work will commonly put the same leg down each time they stop at a traffic light. Over time the cyclist may develop pain in one of their knees, osteopathic treatment can help the patient relieve pain, but osteopathy as an approach would involve suggesting that the patient put a different leg down when they come to each traffic light.
